OVERVIEW
Our client is a long/short hedge fund specializing in Japanese equity investments. The firm was founded in Singapore by a Japanese Portfolio Manager who spun out from a Japan-focused hedge fund several years ago.
We invest in Japanese and global equities, with assets under management exceeding JPY 50 billion. The firm has a dynamic and entrepreneurial culture, with a young team primarily composed of professionals in their 20s and 30s.
Responsibilities
This position is based in Singapore and offers the opportunity to join the Japan equity investment team as a Junior Analyst / Research Assistant, supporting equity research activities.
Depending on performance, there is a clear path to promotion to an Investment Analyst within a few years, with responsibilities expanding to include generating investment ideas and engaging directly with company management.
This role is suitable for candidates with around one year or more of relevant experience, and is ideal for those who are looking to build an international career at an early stage.
Conduct fundamental research on Japanese listed companies by reviewing earnings releases, IR materials, and regulatory filings (e.g. annual reports), identifying investment opportunities and risks
Collect and maintain accurate financial data, key performance metrics, and company guidance; build and maintain financial models to analyze company performance, valuation, and market trends
Provide research and administrative support to investment analysts, including monitoring and analyzing macroeconomic indicators and market developments relevant to the Japanese equity market
Requirements
Advanced Japanese language proficiency (Above JLPT N1) to read the financial documents in Japanese and communicate with Japanese spoken stakeholders
Bachelor’s degree or above
Minimum 1 year of experience in Japanese equity research on the buy-side or sell-side, or as a Research Assistant
Advanced Excel skills (data handling, functions, financial analysis)
Strong understanding of accounting principles, financial statements (P&L, balance sheet, cash flow), and valuation methodologies
Strong analytical and financial modeling skills
Ability to work accurately and efficiently in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment
Independent, proactive, with strong teamwork skills
High attention to detail, accuracy, and accountability
Degree from a Top 100 university based on QS World University Rankings, other reputable Asian universities, or Singapore autonomous universities is a plus (advantageous for Employment Pass under COMPASS framework)
CFA charterholder or currently pursuing the CFA qualification is a plus
