The Senior Vice President, Japan Desk – ASEAN will oversee the identification and development of new business opportunities among Japanese companies operating in the ASEAN region, as well as ASEAN-based organizations aiming to expand their activities in Japan. The scope of work covers both private-sector and public-sector clients. The role is instrumental in strengthening the firm’s visibility and relationships in these markets, shaping and executing marketing strategies, and contributing to the development of investigative and analytical solutions.
Key responsibilities include creating customized proposals, collaborating with global colleagues to convert new opportunities, participating as a speaker at external events, and producing thought-leadership materials that reinforce the firm’s positioning. In addition, the role involves overseeing the delivery of complex investigative assignments, ensuring they meet the high standards for which the firm is regarded internationally.
Responsibilities
Business Development
A major component of this role involves driving commercial growth through both market visibility and proactive engagement with potential clients. This includes uncovering new segments of Japanese-linked organizations operating within ASEAN and working closely with senior leadership across regions to communicate the team’s value proposition effectively.
The individual stepping into this position should be a confident, bilingual professional capable of articulating service capabilities with credibility, cultivating a robust pipeline of prospective opportunities, and offering comprehensive support to Japanese clients throughout the region.
Core responsibilities include:
- Establishing contact with key decision‑makers at Japanese corporations
- Identifying fresh business prospects for the Japan Desk and regional teams
- Developing and maintaining a healthy pipeline while deepening client relationships
- Leveraging existing corporate networks to expand service opportunities
- Presenting service offerings, articulating benefits, and contributing toward revenue targets
- Tracking market trends to uncover opportunities for cross‑selling
- Working alongside marketing teams to tailor communication materials and support events designed to generate new business
Case Work
The role also requires overseeing a variety of assignments involving investigative analysis and intelligence‑driven work. This includes managing client interactions, shaping project methodologies, coordinating both internal and external resources, conducting analytical reviews, and ensuring the quality and accuracy of reports.
A strong understanding of commercial viability is essential, as all projects must align with financial objectives, including P&L considerations. Because project teams often consist of specialists from multiple countries and disciplines, clear communication, transparency, and well‑coordinated collaboration are critical.
Qualifications
- Background in business development or client-facing roles within professional services or consulting environments
- Familiarity with fields such as investigative research, risk intelligence, due diligence, regulatory compliance, digital investigations, or economic security is advantageous
- Extensive hands-on experience working within Japanese corporate settings
- Solid understanding of U.S. market dynamics, including political, economic, regulatory, and risk‑related factors
- Exceptional communication abilities in both Japanese and English, with the capacity to engage seamlessly with Japanese counterparts both within ASEAN and in Japan
- Comfortable navigating and adapting to different business cultures as needed
- Experience drafting, reviewing, and managing contractual documentation
- Strong relationship‑building skills, with an ability to earn trust across internal teams and external clients
- Demonstrated capability to collaborate across various business units or service lines
- High degree of adaptability, initiative, and interpersonal effectiveness
- Willingness to undertake regular travel, both regionally and internationally
Leadership
At the Senior Vice President level, the role involves contributing to the development of a strong Japan Desk function within the ASEAN region. Key elements include:
